Domo Use Case: Time Tracking

Although we spend most of our time building Domo solutions for clients, we also love an opportunity to leverage Domo to automate the visualization of our own data. Most recently, we used Domo to automatically update our clients on how much time we have spent on their projects.

The Problem: Manual Google Sheet Updates

At One Analytics, we track the time we spend on client projects within Harvest for internal purposes (billing, payroll, etc.). However, we also provide clients with updates on how many hours have been spent that month or over the course of a retainer. We historically provided these updates by pulling the data from Harvest and then manually adding it into a Google sheet for each client.

The process was inefficient, susceptible to manual errors, and not scalable. Most importantly, it took away from time that could have been spent working on client projects.

The Solution: Domo

One Analytics has a free Domo instance that we used to solve this problem. (Creating a free Domo instance takes minutes, doesn’t require a credit card, and has the full functionality of Domo. You can sign your organization up here.)

We pulled our Harvest data into Domo using a pre-built connection and were able to quickly build each client a dashboard with tables and charts that showed how much time we have spent on their behalf. We then added each client as a Domo user with access to their respective dashboard.

The image shows a sample dashboard within Domo including a summary number of total hours spent, a bar graph of hours by task, and a detailed hours breakdown table.

Domo uses a credit system to allocate and manage resources within its platform, enabling users to pay for processing power, storage, and additional features based on their usage needs. Our Harvest connection takes approximately one credit per day. That’s well within Domo’s free credit limit of 300 per month which leaves plenty of room to solve other problems with the platform in the future. It additionally requires no manual intervention which gives us more time in the day to work on our clients’ projects.
